== Plot ==
As Steven discusses his wife's pregnancy with a friend who owns a store, a rude man interrupts them. After the man leaves, Steven follows and kills him. Shortly afterward, his wife, Annie, is killed in a hit-and-run accident as they cross the street together. Steven is subsequently left with traumatic flashbacks whenever he attempts to cross a street. Several years later, Steven works as a contract killer, though he experiences difficulty in his latest assignment, a family man named Frank. As he argues with a taxi driver to drive him across the street so he can follow Frank, a man falls from the building on to the cab. Excited to find that Steven is a contract killer, the man introduces himself as Percival and hires Steven to kill him.
Percival explains that he believes fate has brought them together, as he has been cursed with immortality and wishes to die. Although Percival has attempted suicide countless times, it always fails, and these attempts have left him heavily scarred. Steven, who does not believe in fate, gives Percival a chance to reconsider, then shoots him in the chest. When Percival miraculously survives both this attempt and several point blank shots to the head, which leave him disfigured and blinded in one eye, Steven finally accepts it is more than mere luck. Intrigued by the challenge, Steven probes Percival for clues to defeat the curse. Percival reveals that he is a gay man and that part of his suicidal tendencies come from the death of his boyfriend, Chris. The two men slowly bond over their shared loss.
Steven hires a gay man to sleep with Percival, hoping that an emotional high may make him mortal; this too fails, and Percival is disgusted when Steven murders the other man. As they consider their next course of action, Percival flirts with a friendly barkeep. They end up at Percival's house, where the barkeep severely beats Percival. After he learns about this, Steven feigns homosexuality at the same bar and allows himself to fall into the bartender's scam. Steven shoots the barkeep in the groin when he attempts to jump Steven. Percival is once again disgusted by Steven's behavior, but Steven insists that Percival must have wanted this to happen at some level, or else he would not have given Steven the information. However, Steven experiences continued reluctance in killing Frank, much to the annoyance of his employer, Thomas.
Steven learns Percival is a painter and sees the beginning of his latest work, a portrait of Chris. Percival, when he visits Steven, sees Annie's dress and flees. Though Steven denies ever having suicidal thoughts, that night he puts on his wife's dress and aims his pistol at his head. Before he can pull the trigger, he sees a thug about to kill a cop outside. While still wearing his wife's dress, Steven kills the thug and saves the cop's life. He excitedly calls Percival and explains that he has found his purpose in life and now believes in fate. He later confronts Frank and admits that he has been killing people based on a half-remembered license plate ever since Annie's death to hopefully murder his wife's killer; however, he feels he can no longer do this, as his emotional state has woken from its deadened state.
Percival confesses that it was he who accidentally killed Annie. He begs Steven for forgiveness and says he can not stand to die before being forgiven. Steven refuses to forgive him and pushes him off his balcony. Percival finally dies. Steven meets with Thomas at a restaurant and says he is quitting; from the other patrons' point of view, Steven is talking to himself. After Percival's funeral, Steven visits a gallery of Percival's work. He is horrified to recognise Chris' portrait as the rude man he killed earlier. Steven wanders into the street in a daze and sees Percival, Chris, and Annie beckon him on the other side. As he crosses toward them, a truck strikes him. When he wakes, a doctor tells him that he is lucky to be alive.
